Raising the lid on a Maytag washer will stop it, no matter what cycle it is in. Opening the lid opens the lid switch which removes power from the machine. The lid microswitch actuator is mechanically linked to the lid by the plunger rod. If the microswitch housing slides back in its mount, closing the lid will not close the switch and the washer won't operate.
